Questions & Answers

Frequently Asked Questions

Find clear answers to common questions about private candidate entries, fees, access requirements, and examination day procedures.

What is a private candidate?
A private candidate is someone who is not enrolled full-time at the school or college where they sit their examinations. You study independently, through an online provider, or with a private tutor, and register with our centre solely to sit the written and practical exam papers.
Does submitting an application guarantee my examination entry?
No. Submitting an application registers your entry request with our centre. Our examinations team must review your requested subjects, check examination timetable clashes, verify your identification and access arrangements, and confirm centre capacity before your entry is accepted and fees are finalized.
What is a UCI (Unique Candidate Identifier)?
A UCI is a 12-digit number followed by one capital letter that tracks your examination results across different exam boards and centres. If you have previously sat GCSEs or A-Levels in the UK, your UCI appears on previous statements of entry or certificates. Having your UCI ensures all your exam results link together.
What if I do not know my UCI?
If you do not know your UCI or have never sat UK examinations before, you can indicate this on your application. If you have sat exams previously, contacting your previous school or checking your old certificate will help locate it. If this is your first time sitting UK examinations, our centre will generate a new UCI for you.
Can someone under the age of 18 apply?
Yes. We welcome private candidates of all eligible ages. For candidates under 18 at the time of application, contact details and signed consent from a parent, legal guardian, or responsible adult are mandatory.
Can I enter multiple examination subjects in one application?
Yes. You can enter multiple subjects across approved awarding bodies (Pearson Edexcel, AQA, and OCR) within a single application. Our review process checks that your paper timings do not create unresolvable timetable clashes.
When should I arrive on examination day?
Candidates must arrive at the centre 15 to 30 minutes prior to the published examination start time to complete identity verification, bag storage, and seat allocation. Under JCQ regulations, candidates arriving significantly late after awarding body cut-off times cannot be admitted to the examination room.
What identification is required to sit examinations?
All candidates must present an original, valid government-issued photographic ID (Passport, UK Photographic Driving Licence, or Biometric Residence Permit) at every examination session. Candidates under 18 may present a Birth Certificate accompanied by a parent or legal guardian with photo ID.
What is the cancellation and refund policy?
Examination entries are strictly non-refundable once registered with the awarding body. Cancellations requested prior to formal board entry submission are subject to a £40 administration fee per paper. Practical science endorsements and spoken language assessment components are strictly non-refundable upon registration.
Can I request Access Arrangements (such as 25% Extra Time)?
Yes. Candidates requiring access arrangements (such as extra time, supervised rest breaks, a reader, scribe, word processor, or separate room sitting) can specify this during the application. Access arrangements require valid supporting evidence (such as an up-to-date Form 8 assessment or specialist medical documentation) and must be submitted early to allow for formal review.
How do payments work?
Once your application is reviewed and approved, we provide a clear fee statement. We support payments via direct Bank Transfer (using a unique reference generated for your application) or Cash at Centre by appointment. We do not process online credit card charges, ensuring full transparency with zero hidden processing fees.
